Research thrusts

Institute of Aquaculture (IA)

The Institute undertakes basic and applied researches based on national goals and priorities.

Its facilities are adequate to support research programs and projects on:

  • Development and/or improvement of hatchery and culture techniques for commercially important finfish, shellfish, seaweeds and other aquatic organisms;
  • Fish health, nutrition and genetics; and
  • Conservation and management of inland and coastal waters.

Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS)

The Institute is engaged in the following researches:

  • Fisheries and aquatic resource management
  • Assessment of fisheries information and indigenous technologies
  • Poverty studies in fishing communities
  • Economic and political development in fisheries
  • Review of fisheries laws/policies

Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT)

The Institute conducts both basic and applied researches. Current research thrusts are:

  • Development of value-added fishery products
  • Lactic acid bacterial (LAB) fermentation
  • Fish protein hydrolysates
  • Waste utilization
  • Development of Philippine quality standards and codes of practice
  • Omega-3 fatty acids studies

Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO)

Research activities of the Institute revolve around the following areas:

  • Marine policy
  • Fisheries management
  • Biological and physical oceanography
  • Fish and crustacean biology
  • Resource assessment
  • Coastal zone hydrodynamics
